Jazz artist Esbjörn Svensson
dies in diving accident
Swedish jazz star Esbjörn Svensson, aged 44, had an accident while scuba diving in the Stockholm archipelago. His life could not be saved.
Burkhard Hopper, manager of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.), calls Svensson "the most important figure in jazz in this decade.” With his genre-defying music, he reached audiences far beyond the traditional jazz crowd.
Pianist and composer Svensson, drummer Magnus Öström and bass player Dan Berglund formed E.S.T. in 1993. They have since released a dozen successful records, and have won numerous Swedish and international awards.
The tragedy occurred when Svensson was diving with a group and an instructor outside of Stockholm. He was found severely injured at the bottom of the sea and was later pronounced dead in hospital. Swedish police are investigating the accident.
