I wonder if not the majority of the people that paints Sweden in black colors (racism, expensive, bad finances...) are the real racists? Racism? When France destroys "homes" of romans and throw them out of the country, I would call that racism, The guy claiming that Sweden is number one in Europe when it comes to racism, must be the same guy who wanted to move to a country where they dont accept foreigners!

Argentino:

The Swedish government rarely pick sides, but the public is pro-palestinian and critical to the Cuban regime. Sweden are military allies with the US, UK and many other Western Powers and are currently involved in fighting in Afghanistan, although Sweden's not in NATO. Sweden did mostly support the United States when it comes to Iraq, though being critical to the execution of Hussein as Sweden is in general against Death Sentence.

I hope I were able to help. :)

our opinions are only base on our experiences...as for me sweden is a great country, greater than my homeland for many reasons...i like their culture and rules ,swedes are helpful, loving, honest, not judgmental and objective...i found a great man here that became my husband...we just need to learn and fit to their society..hurra hurra sverige!

...To all the foreigners, racism exists everywhere, Does the benefit from leaving your homeland outweighs the racism you endure. Only time will help you integrate into a new culture. Almost all the ethnicities have faced racism before they were accepted in America. They all gained acceptance by hard work and showing loyalty to the country. Don't feel down because of what few rotten apples think of you, FIGHT TO MAKE YOUR PLACE IN THIS WORLD!!!

...and there might still be changes to come. I think it is human nature to be xenophobic we are afraid of the unknown. If we understand and respect other cultures as we expect from others this world could be a lot better place than it is right now. Most of the people in developing or third world countries leave their homelands to go to the developed countries to seek better lives for themselves and their children...

Wow!! I have read all the comments on this page, couldn't be more confused!!. I've live in United States for 25 years ever since I was a teenager. I have met and hung out with people from all around the world and to tell you the truth I found Scandinavians to be very easy going fun loving people. I have had Norwegian and Swedish roommates during college years and we got along great.. I think the immgrant influx is quite new to Sweden as compared to U.S...

I must point out to Johan that Sweden is far more expensive than the UK. Paint, DIY products, food, clothes, most gifts, and especially medicines are more expensive. Example 16 Ibuprofen cost as litlle as 29p in UK, 3 SEK, and cost about 33Kr / 300pence in Sweden. Shampoo is extortionate here twice if not 3 times the price than the UK. And as for food choice, apart from fish, Sweden needs to learn from UK supermarkets. But Sweden is a beautiful and peaceful country.

In regard to Pippi's comment's. You must come from an even more self-loathing country that I guess you are not very proud of since you hide behind a Swedish icon, Pippi Långstrump! You are indeed very rude yourself and not very well educated. Peace. Bless your heart!

Word of advice on Sweden: avoid at all costs!

The country is very pretty in summer but the people are the most horrible, rude and self-loathing bunch is have ever met.

A lot of it is due to bizarre 'unspoken' social rules and the country's almost complete isolation from the rest of the world till the last 50 yrs or so (e.g. terms such as 'nigger' and 'blackhead' are pretty acceptable there).

I can honestly say I do not ever want to see another Swede as long as I live...

My son lives in Sweden and he is very happy there. I am on my way to him on the 13th August. I can not wait to see Sweden myself. We have a beautiful country ourself, but I wish South Africa's government can learn more by the Swedish government, so that we can be a saver country to live in.

I'm close 2 study there 4 a year and some ppl told me that they're very friendly with foreigners only if u show interest and u travel/study a lot. It's logic! If somebody come 2 my country just 2 become a charge for the gov I won't help him at all, but if he has all the good intention 2 improve himself and helping 2 improve my country I will treat him right! I'm full of expectatives and despite I know it's expensive I'm really planning 2 give the best of myself 2 SWE, KI and my swedish classes!

After reading all the posts about Sweden,i can only conclude that it is a beautiful country, but that the native Swedes are very intolerant and racist, towards foreigners. What a shame, I have immigrated from South Africa to Canada and I have experienced total acceptance.Canada is a great country and I am proud to call myself Canadian.Canada has proven that a multitude of cultures can exist and create a peaceful society.

For example, if imigrant (A filipino) has live in partner @ sweden then latter they'll have a baby without getting married, Is it true that the mother will accept money from government?I mean monthly compensation? And, does the mother can get her father to live there also?

I saw a comment above from Borg and agree with what he said. Except, as an immigrant from the states, I've managed to stay in sweden for 5 years :-). My swedish husband and I have 2 kids born i Sweden. This country is very expensive and complicated for immigrants. But, more so for Swedish youth. Swedish born people (Youth).. are highly educated with little prospect at finding work in Sweden.

Apparently there are racists here who change nickname, saying that Sweden is expensive and so on. They do this just to discourage it seems. The UK, U.S., Finland, Denmark and Norway are more expensive than Sweden. Sure it is expensive but not more expensive than named countries. Welcome here and see for yourselves. It is a beautiful country with open and friendly inhabitants.

Polls show they get around 2-4% of the votes. So dont call sweden a racist county cause its not. All other parties in the goverment has stated that they will never work wih Sverigedemokratern if they, against all odds, get their 4%. And those 2-4% who vote on Sverigedemokrterna are often yelling of the top of their lungs on differnet internet places.
Mattias
Country:  Sweden, Jul 9, 2010
Okey first of all, most swedes are NOT racist. Maybe a bit more in the older generation. We have 1 racist political group "SverigeDemokraterna". In Sweden you need 4% of the votes to get into the goverment, its not even sure they get that. (We have an election in september)

I ADVICE TO SWEDISH GOVERNMENT PLEASE DO SOMETHING BEFORE IT GET WORST UNTIL NO ONE WANT TO TRAVEL AND MOVE THERE IN THE FUTURE.
HARRY
Country:  MALAYSIA, Jul 9, 2010
IF SWEDEN WANT TO HAVE STRONG ECONOMY LIKE USA, UK, CANADA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD START TO THINK HOW TO ATTRACT MORE FOREIGNER TO COME THERE 1ST. OTHERWISE SWEDEN WILL HAVING PROBLEM LATER IN THE FUTURE IF NO ONE WANT TO COME THERE BECAUSE IT WILL BECOME LESS ATTRACTIVE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. THINK ABOUT IT FOR YOUR OWN FUTURE.
HARRY
Country:  MALAYSIA, Jul 9, 2010
THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD CHANGE THEIR POLICY AND MIND SET OF THEIR PEOPLE SO THAT MORE PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD WILL COME THERE TO MIGRATE AS EASY AS OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD SUCH AS UK, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. SWEDEN NEED MORE IMMIGRANTS IN THE FUTURE FOR ECONOMY GROWTH BECAUSE THE POPULATION OF SWEDES ARE LESS COMPARE TO THE SIZE OF THE COUNTRY.
HARRY
Country:  MALAYSIA, Jul 9, 2010
MAYBE SWEDISH GOVERNMENT CAN DO SOMETHING ON IT SO THAT SWEDEN WILL BECOME MORE FRIENDLY AND LESS EXPENSIVE COUNTRY TO STAY FOR THOSE WHO PLAN TO MOVE THERE IN FUTURE.
HARRY

Okay, first off, Canada is home to the first nations, aboriginal people, so if you come to Canada, remember you are visitors in someone else's home, this is not for you to exploit, do that in your own country. As for Sweden, the men pride themselves to much on being easy as do the women, anyone can buy bleach and be blonde..please show me some depth to swedish culture other than that most dont believe in God.it is not appealing at this point, where is culture and God in all of this.

I love Sweden. It's a wonderfull country. For those who are negati-ve guys, I remark a wise saying: "You can not have the best of both worlds", So please enjoy in Sweden the good things and try to live up with the things you don't like. It's just a human actitude: "to do waht the romans do" or in this case "please do what the swedish people do or you'll always live in a hell of unhapiness. Lovely regards to Swedwn and her people.

If that is what you care most, forget the rest troubles please. You can not get all aspects to be perfect for you, if you don't work hard to pursue them.
Personnally, I like Sweden very much. Especially its green and fair society, which is Chinese should try to learn from.
People in cold areas-based cultures over the globe tend not to be so direct and passionate, that's what I have in mind. Anyway, Swedish people are very friendly and glad to help, I have heard of it.

I just want to point out that when you are enjoying some things, you can not be able to enjoy other good things in life. I guess you are much older than me, I'm just coming to Sweden for University education.
Sweden is close to the hometown of fairytale. but it doesn't mean that you imagine there is some sort of paradise or perfect places in this world. You have chosen Sweden. Think about what's your original purpose. What are you setting out to get rid of? Have you achieved that in Sweden?

From those comments, It seemed that "the wounded" really got wounded. feeling quite sorry for him or her. But, if you are worrying about money and people's attitude, Why don't you come to China? Here you can enjoy the cheapest goods in the world and the greatest respect for all foreigners.
I'm not making an advertisement for my country.I confess it's really not a good destination for immigrants.

If you are a foreigner reading theese posts, don't be discouraged by the seemingly narrow-minded swedes that post stuff about how hard it is to live in Sweden and how no one want's you here. We do want you here.

The amount of imigrants is not to high, actually the calculations say that we're going to be needing about 700000 more imigrants by the year 2030 to support our growing elderly population.

And yes, tuition is free for foreigners aswell as natives, atleast for now.

continued from below...

you all know that saying "money is everything"?? well it couldn't be any more true when it comes to living in Sweden. Be very aware of the super high costs of living here before you come (if you come). The trade-off for living in a country that is so well developed & clean etc is the SUPER HIGH TAXES that pay for it all. Money doesn't grow on trees. It will come out of your pockets VERY FAST when you get here. Better have lots of money for living in Sweden...
Borg
Country:  Sweden, May 27, 2010
The MAIN PROBLEM in SWE is all the dumb immigrants that come here thinking that it's some sort of easy dreamland. That's why 9 out of every 10 foreigners that come here leave after 2 or 3 months because they find out the real truth, VERY HARD, EXPENSIVE country to live in. It's a simple equation : no jobs + expensive country to live in = harsh existence for immigrants. The only ones that do well here are those that already have lots of money when they come here!!!

only the rscist wing will use the financial problems to increase the focus on poor immigrants . those immigrants who already have eniugh problems in theír live that mountains cannot bear . the immigrants need nothing but welicoming hearts and real integration system so that they can start work and be productive and feel that they are apart of their new country

and , what goes to the immigrants is only a small percentage of the taxes . check your national budget . and your dady pay his taxes because he needs to do that according to the system of the country , not because they collect money for immigrants . and thats why we cannot see a single NGO that collect donations to improve immigrants live .
the wounded
Country:  sweden, May 23, 2010
and please stop telling about your dads money given to immigrants . your dad pay his taxes . and the goverment have plan for spending taxes including assistance for immigrants and poverty in the world according to the international conventions . if we would wait for you and your father to pay directly to the immigrants then we should have waited hundereds of years before a penny gets out of your pockets

Sweden have really good healthcare, free school lot's of stuff and many immigrants doesn't learn (refuse?) understandable swedish. I could begin talking of all the reasons your county is racist and your religon causes all problems in the world, but i don't.
A Swede
Country:  sweden, May 22, 2010
But don't say sweden is racist country #1, if i moved to whatever country, india, pakistan, japan, i will get treated different than the "real" citizens, because i'm different. Sweden accept "asyl" for many thousand immigrants a year, many countries doesn't accept immigrants at all.
A swede
Country:  Sweden, May 22, 2010
But you say no one sit beside you in the bus, if the bus is really full and that happens, yes, thats strange, but Swedes in general don't like to sit with a stranger, no matter where youre from, white or black, a swede will sit somewhere else than you (if there are unused seats).
Sweden is also a very expensive country, and that might aggravate your experience of sweden.

Answer to "the wounded":

I don't know where you live and how bad your experience really have been, but sure, some parts of sweden can be maybe less friendly to immigrants, but can't see why you have the right to classify Swedes as racists? I do think Swedes treat immigrants a little different than people born swedes.

Yes I know it's very expensive country to live in. I have visited there twice now from the UK. Next time I go (hopefully sometime in the next few years again) I will definately make sure I take a lot more money with me, i mean save up a lot more. I ran out of money very quickly last time in Sweden. Luckily i had a friend who owns a house in the outskirts of Stockholm, he helped me stay there longer than i could afford to! expensive country though...

hi 'm from Canada but am a full-blooded Swede. I was born in Stockholm and came to CAN with the fam when i was 8, I'm now 30. Canada is a MUCH easier country to live in than SWE. It's so much easier to get good jobs in Canada than it is in Sweden, it's not even comparable. Sweden is one of the hardest countries to find any employment opportunities at all. It's brutal. CAN is super easy to have good jobs and high-quality of life. I only visit SWE sometimes now. Canada is best country on earth!!!

Sanpreet and Sara, Yes, there are some racists in Sweden – as in most countries, unfortunately. But most people would say that Sweden is characterized by the opposite: tolerance. Sweden is also ranked number one on the Migrant Integration Policy Index: http://www.integrationindex.eu/topics/2638.html
And celtic41, I've met some great Canadians and am working with some Canadian freelance writers who have decided to move here. So Sweden–Canada seems to be a good combination!

Sweden is a very racist country, that will never change. The racism here doesn't ever get better as time goes by, but it gets continually worse. Racial segregation & discrimination continues to get much worse all the time. It's because it's all the immigrants & foreigners that always cause ALL the problems in SWE. They always bring with them all the problems of their own home-countries where they came from, and all the real Swedes know this. It's why they really dislike any foreigners.

Sweden is THE MOST RACIST COUNTRY in the Western World, and definately the most racist in all of Europe!!!!! It's a modern-day Nazi regime. If you are clearly not a Swede but are an immigrant or a foreigner, the Swedes will not even acknowledge your existence in public. They will never even look you in the eye when you stand in line to pay for something. Swedes hate foreigners. They see them as nothing but invaders on their homeland. Swedes will always hate foreigners. Can't wait to back India!!

carry on from below... Even the cost of basics necessities like food ie. dairy products, meat, toiletries, etc is very expensive. You will quickly find that the Swedish Kronor doesn't take you very far here. And if you plan on going out to the nightclubs and/or movies sometimes you better have lots of money to spend. This is to alert anyone who comes here: be very prepared for the extreme high costs of living in Sweden. You will be VERY surprised at how much everything costs!

To anyone who plans to visit Sweden or come to study or work here... just make sure that you bring lots and LOTS of money with you when you come. Or if you don't you will have a terrible time in Sweden. Everything is so very expensive here. Sweden can be a wonderful place to be if you have the funds. Sweden can be an absolute nightmare to be if you don't have the funds. It's one of the most expensive countries to live in all of Europe!!!

Sweden is a monarchy - not a democracy. The Swedish king loans his power to the Swedish government. The people of Sweden have been fooled for decades, led to believe we are a great neutral country. Believe me -the sceenery here is outstanding with vast forrests and our unique sweetwater archipelago and the swedes are warmhearted - not the racist nazis others think we are (it was the present king's father who let the nazis pass thru our nation). Do visit us - we need the cash. ;7D

There are SO many good things to say about Sweden, so many nice things to see, people to meet. Sweden a beautiful country but Swedes are racist and think they are above everyone else in the world. Most Swedes I met abroad think they are the most pretty and clever people in the world. Sweden- homogeneous country with little tolerance for people who are not blue eyed/blonde. In fact a lot of people are "closet racist" which you will notice if you work in Sweden. I now live in the UK –a country not without its problems but a much more vibrant and interesting country.

Thanx to "the third way" and the SAP sweden has evolved over the past century into on of the most advanced nations in the world in regards to human rights, democracy, social justice, women rights and equality. Alltough the "Moderaterna" inspired from the USA is trying to ruin the welfare for the common people with tax cuts and 1984 surveillance methods (FRA) i and many others hopes that they dont get far, and that SAP will take back the power in the next election!

Eden, don't worry about the hating black people issue. I don't feel Swedes hate black people. One of my Swedish friend is working in one of biggest company in Sweden. His boss is a black woman who came from South Africa. They don't care if you are black or white. All they care is if you have the right skill and qualification to offer to this job. Also if you are a hard worker, willing to learn new things.

I think the biggest issue is jobs. For one, there's few of them, and also segregation issues are still pretty new to Sweden (compared to the US eg) and laws need to be better to protect against discrimination.

well I know first-hand how ridiculous the prices are for everything here. I'm from Denmark just working here as a marine welder now. But i thought DNK was very expensive, and then i came here!! it's like 2.5 to 3 times more for everything here. But i will be going back home in about 18 months from now. I will have a better life back in Denmark after all, mainly due to super high cost of liveing here in Sweden.

... This is why 9 out of every 10 foreigners that come to SWEwith high hopes end up leaving and going back to their home countries within the first 6 months. Not to mention that people truly don't understand just how expensive it really is to live a normal, average life in Sweden. It's one of the most expensive countries to live in Europe!!! everything is horrendously expensive... even the basics like food & bus pass! crazy expensive!!!

The SWE gov't keeps letting in more and more immigrants trying to entice people to come study & work here. But there exists a MAJOR problem with this in Sweden. The gov't want to attract foreigners to come & work here to stimulate the economy in these rough times. BUT... the problem is that there are absolutely NO jobs to get here!!! the equation doesn't make any sense... come here to work & contribute to society... BUT when you get here there arent any jobs to get... yikes

This is no joke, you will feel like your face is being bitten off during the freezing winter. It can get to MINUS -45 degrees Celcius in Stockholm on a daily basis for 8 to 9 months of the year here. But more average is about -30 Celcius. If you like it freezing cold, then please come, if you don't, then don't come.

Well I know 2 things about Sweden that will always be part of life in this country: 1)A lot of racism (that will never change), and 2) the very high costs of living (even basic food is very expensive!!) Transit pass (which you definately need) is also extremely expensive. If you are prepared to afford all the necessary things to live here then you should come. If you are not prepared ie(don't have significant money) then u better choose another different country!

I found this site and wanted to post a comment of my personal experience. I lived in SWeden for 5.5 years, the beauty fo the country is unparalleled. But yes it was extremely hard to find any good job there, even for highly educated. It's like 15,000 people applying for 1 job for everything there. The weather was far too dark and cold for me to live there permanently. winter 8 months/year, dark, freezing cold. I back in Germany now, nice warm weather :)

also, it's very expensive to live here. If you don't land a very well paying job very quickly you will be forever trying to "catch-up" here, like i have been. The minimal (and i mean minimal) student assistance is enough for 3 meals per month!!! (at McDonalds), it's really nothing to speak of. I have business degree, no jobs here to get. I worked at pizzaria for 4 years here. I going back to Turkey in 3 months. Going home so happy!

I watched a croatian documentary about life in Sweden couple of years ago and high prices were clearly demonstrated, some of them 4-5 times biger than in Croatia (for example ice-cream ball =3 Eur; Pizza = 15-20 Eur, pack of fruit = 10 Eur). Of course if you have big enough earnings then it shouldn't be a problem to pay taxes, when it is for higer purpouse of maintaining prosperous society. What do you need more ? ...

bUT The SWE government doesn't give a generous lending hand as people might think. Living costs in here are VERY high compared to most of the rest of Europe. Taxes are VERY high to pay for decent healthcare & social welfare systems. Alcohol is VERY expensive & gas PRICES ridiculous! That why most people don't drive in SWE but take transit everywhere- which keeps pollution very low. But its even VERY expensive for monthly bus/train pass, ridiculous prices actually!!! but must have it
Emil

adding from below... Also i am speaking the God honest truth. I have several immigrant friends that live here in Sweden. The real truth is that if you come to this country for whatever reason, be it school, to live & work etc., the ones that only ever find it a pleasurable experience are the ones that already have significant money when they come here. The ones that bring in money when they come are the ones that only prosper here. For everyone else it is very difficult. This is honest truth

It seems to me that a lot of people have a lot of misguided onformation about Sweden in general. Sweden is NOT a country where everything is easy, everyone is NOT nice, and it is VERY difficult to get jobs here-even for the SWEDES themselves. Students that wish to move here and eventually get citizenship will be in for a real surprise when their immigration applications are revoked because they cannot find any work ever!!! this is a real fact, don't be surprised.

There is no point in moving to another country (or staying in your own) whatever beautifull it is and pleasent people might be, if you can't find decent job there for living. And the fact that whiles the quality of life is high, its not gonna happen by magic. Just like in any other country, you have to work for it. SWE is not a rich country anymore, at all. It has already given all its money away to helping other countries in the world, like with foreign aid etc. All the stupid immigrants that keep coming into SWE have totally destroyed the Swedish monetary system, that was originally designed as a socialist system to help it's own citizens. This system is doomed for failure. Result: huge increases of taxes and living costs to compensate for this. Quality of life will go way down very soon ...

immigrants do nothing but bad for the country of Sweden. There are too many immigrants in Sweden. They all wish they were really Swedish but they will never be real, TRUE Swedes!!! This is because one cannot "become" Swedish just by gaining citizenship to the country. You have to have Swedish genetic bloodlines to be a real Swede. Everyone who wasn't born in Sweden, or doesn't have the Viking genes and bloodlines, is NOT a real Swede. Stop trying to be something you can never be!

Immigrants are doing a great deal of good for Sweden. At the geriatric care home where I work, a majority of the employees are immigrants. Who would take care of our elders if all these (competent & caring) immigrants were "sent away"? I also think it is our duty as a rich and peaceful country to accept people escaping deep poverty or war into our society.
I'm hoping for change, and for Sverigedemokraterna not to get into the parliament.

Yes, there is a big problem of segregation in this country, so what's the answer to that problem? It's NOT to send away all immigrants but to work for integration between native Swedes and immigrants.

The very thing that will cause the eventual total breakdown & collapse of Sweden is the far too loose immigration policies!!! Sweden does not even have anywhere near enough jobs for its own native Swedes!! & it continues to let in so many immigrants who come looking for jobs here... it's simple math my friends. The gov't can't even take proper care of its own native people, how the heck is it going to be able to take care of continually more immigrants flooding in?!

Yes every country is plagued with immigration and a total lack of control on it and this has caused problems in ireland too.
I run a business and the swedish people I deal with our brilliant.
Every country need diversity and immigration but it needs to be controlled and this is where the breakdown lies.

yes. very true. But the huge culture & ethnicity difference between native Swedes and immigrants coming from places in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia IS like black and white, or night and day!!! The truth is that if you aren't of northern European ethnicity but live in Sweden, you will always be seen as a foreigner here. That's just the way it is

Also....(just to let most people know one more thing about Islam in Sweden)

Historically, The VAST majority of all Muslims that live in Sweden (which remember, don't even practice Islam AT ALL in SWE) actually came from Turkey, parts of Romania, many of the Balkan countries in southern Europe, and some from African countries. The Vast majority didn't come from the Middle East at all.

BUT, most of the immigrants that come from Iraq & Syria are actually Christians!!! There are huge populations of Christians in those 2 countries and they come to Sweden because it IS a Christian country here! Even the Swedish national flag has a Christian cross on it!! -that will never change. Sweden is the beautiful, free, Christian stronghold of the north, and of the entire world!! PEACE out!

It is a proven statistical fact that approximately 85% of all the Muslims that currently live in Sweden DO NOT practice Islam in any way, shape or form in Sweden. This roughly 85% don't even go to Mosques, don't even pray, & don't even try to promote or highlight Islam in any way in SWE. Muslims that immigrate to here from countries like Iran, Iraq, Syria, etc...they feel NO NEED to remain so tied to Islam once they come to this land of the beautiful, FREE north!! Thats a fact!!

Sweden was portrayed as an ideal society by Anthony Giddens in his textbook. Now, seemingly some commentators of this headline might want to educate themselves by reading philosophy or by appreciating the fact that their country is idealized even in academic circles of any country be it Pakistan.

Whereas this may be nationally justified, (well every culture has its own value system and a way of justifying things within itself), this renders a tad bit of blindness and intolerance towards others who may be from less privileged backgrounds. Apparently, from what I read here, there is a lot of room for 'plurality' and 'diversity' to be embraced or celebrated, but it's the prerogative of a common swede to decide upon this.
Metal History Bilal

A philosophical inquiry into the nature of inter-subjective perception created by a common swede shows that the principle of humanity, which is one of the three formulations of the Kantian categorical imperative, is severely being overshadowed by an ideological fixation that closely rhymes with eugenic or patriotic systems of thought.

Don! if you can read properly then you wouldn't have made the mistake of claiming that "someone" had made the false statement of tuition not being paid by the government. Tuition fees are paid for by the government. BUT the money that the gov't uses comes right out of the taxpayers pockets in VERY high taxes on everything here in Sweden. But you don't get any of the funds up-front. you have to claim them back at the end of the fiscal year, in your tax statements! duh

Someone mentioned earlier that "Tuition fees" were paid for by the government; but tuition was not free. That person appears to have made a false statement. Below is a statement I found on the Swedish government's Study in Sweden page. Seems clear to me, that Tuition IS paid for by the Swedish government.

"With a few exceptions, all courses and programs are financed by the government and are thus free of charge for those Swedish and foreign students who are accepted."

Lady, your facts are wrong. Just cuz a few people you know are doing ok there does not mean that the vast majority of foreigners are doing well in Sweden, even after being here for many years. Most live in tightly clustered apartment dwellings, way too overcrowded like 7 or 8 to a 1 or 2 bedroom suite. They cant ever afford anything bigger. Then they forever complain to the gov't to solve their "situation". Thats what immigrants should expect when they come here: tight, overcrowded living spaces
George
Country:  Sweden, Sep 14, 2009
The only way to solve these problems is not through more attempts at integration of those immigrants, BUT to effectively solve the problems is to remove them entirely. This is why there is massive deportations going on right now. Other cultures that are brought into Sweden fail miserably because Swedes and the government arent ever going to change their culture, customs, or national religion for the immigrants. This will always remain this way, adapt or face deportation!!
Lady_3

Does SE mass media focus much on these problems? What is your government's attitude to these problems and do they plan any campagnes to try solving these problems? Is it really so that a foreigner with great work experience, highly professional and experienced, has no sense for applying a job in Sweden? Would Swedish employers ALWAYS prefer Swedish emploees? What if this candidate is foreigner but with SE education?

But Sweden gov't is starting to deport so many of the foreigners that come here in the last 5 to 10 yrs or so. They are all being sent back to their home countries by the tens of thousands because they never succeed here in Sweden and never find any good jobs. Then they don't want to leave the country but the gov't & the police & military force them out and deport them. There are MASSIVE deportations here everywhere...The year of the "Return". & this will continue for years to come........

liquor an gasoline are very expensive here in Sweden. So is practically everything you have to buy in the retail stores like clothes, shoes, and even food. Food here has become really quite expensiver in the last few years and the pricing of meat, dairy, and bread went through the roof compared to many other Euro countries. To buy a car here is extremely expensive now. The price of gasoline or petrol is about 2.5 to 3 times the cost it is in the USA

foreigners who plan to come here should be prepared for a "teasing life" unless they already come into the country with lots of money because yes it's a VERY expensive country to live in. They'll see that it's soooo beautiful, but it will be very difficult for the average immigrant who thinks they'll live a life of ease & luxury...They WON'T!! They'll see nice, beautiful, & expensive things everywhere but wont be able to ever afford any of them. This will make for a depressing existence...

yeah thats how it is here. 6 months of freezing cold and dark with very little daylight, 3 months of very cold and a little more daylight, and the last 3 months in the summer of semi-warm weather and usually sunny. But the summer here never gets really warm anyways. Once in a blue-moon we get some rare heatwave like Europe sometimes gets. But usually its much colder here all year than any other European country.

... But foreigners is not always accepted here, and many swedes should probably employ a swede rather than a foreigner. Try living here in winter. In the dark, with maybe 5 hours of daylight (and those hours we are in school, and when we get home, it's dark. How nice.).

Many of you say that swedish people don't accept other cultures. It's so strange to me, I feel that we welcome other cultures. I like to keep a distance while they are very touchy feely from the get-go.

Answer to some of the questions about education here. NO the Swedish government does NOT give free tuition for foreigners. You have to already be a full Swedish citizen to receive any education benefits. It only covers tuition fees but does not cover anything else. The extremely high living costs in Sweden is what repels many foreigners from eventually deciding not to come here to study, and they choose other places instead that aren't so expensive to live...
Eric

yeah, Sweden is the heart of Scandinavia and you have to be fair-skinned, have light coloured eyes like blue or green, and have fair hair if you want to get any of the good jobs here because all the good jobs are controlled by the native Swedes, who all have fair complexion. Dark people stick out here very sharply and everyone here will know the darker people are foreigners. They will be treated poorly by the 8 million Swedes.

Sweden does not provide free tuition for education to immigrants. The Swedish government only provides free tuition for post-secondary studies for Swedes only. You have to already be a full Swedish citizen to get any financial assistance for education. But even so, everyone even the native Swedes still have to pay for books, room and board, and all living costs...which are extremely expensive. Sweden is very expensive place to live!! Very high taxes.

Also......Sweden is such a beautiful country, but it's kind of like a "mirage" to many foreigners. They come here and quickly realize that things are not so easy, like finding employment and blending into the Swedish culture. If you try to bring in your own culture into Sweden you'll never fit in or be accepted by the Swedes. Swedes will Not have any part of foreign cultures within the country! You must adapt to the Swedish way of life, culture & customs to have any chance of making it here
Jorgen

Sweden is an extremely beautiful country. But is a country of great contradictions. Many foreigners who come here to find work or to live here quickly run into many difficulties trying to find any good jobs because thet are all controlled by Swedes. And Swedes only give those good jobs to other Swedes. Since there are about 8 million native Swedes in the country, you can do the math...

Foreigners that come to Sweden to live are not Swedish, and can never really be Swedish unless their parents are full Swedes (genetically) and their parents were both born in Sweden. Foreigners who eventually obtain citizenship in Sweden are not special and they don't get citizenship to Sweden because the gov't thinks they are special in any way. The only reason foreigners can get citizenship here is because of the Swedish government's loose immigration policies

If you want to live in Sweden then you will have to be ready for a life filled with racism & hardships, that will never go away.....and a life where all the good and meaningful opportunities like jobs and housing are given to the native Swedes. Sweden is already becoming very well known throughout the world because of its harbouring of Islamic extremeist leaders. Sweden will continually lose the respect from the rest of the world because there are too many Islamic extremeists taking refuge in Sweden right now. Brandbergen Mosque, Medborgarplatsen Mosque, Jarfalla Mosque, and several others in Sweden are controlled by extremist Islamic leaders!!

Also, if you're a foreigner who comes to Swe to work or live and don't already have a big chunk of money in the bank to pay for the super high cost of living here (in other words, if you are starting from scratch) it will be extremely difficult for those people. 10 or 15 years can just fly by and you'll see that you never really got anywhere in this country. Stockholm, Malmo, & Goteborg are all surely turning into immigrant slums. Many Euro countries, like UK, Germany, France, & Holland have all fallen victim to explosive immigrant populations & have totally lost their way, plagued by vast unemployed immigrants & racial segregation. Sweden was once a proud & wealthy nation that was greatly envied by the rest of the world.....But now unfortunately it has all changed. Not due to the current collapse of the world economy, But instead due to the high numbers of immigrants/Asylum seekers/refugees it lets into the country. Life in Sweden has got progressively worse in recent decades...(in direct proportion to the amount of immigrants it lets in)

It's no doubt about it that whenever there is competition for jobs etc. the native Swede will almost always be favoured over the immigrant...EVEN if the two candidates have the exact same credentials on paper. It's just the way it is here, native Swedes are & will always be preferred in anything here. The discrimination will start right from one's personal looks (origin) right down to their last name...and not to forget, if they can speak fluent Swedish or not!

Country:  SWE, Jul 30, 2009
I thing TrueViking is quite correct in his findings. The majority of unemployed in Sweden are immigrants from the Middle East, Africa, and Arab countries. Many of them haven't learned the language after years of being here not because they refuse to...But rather, because it's too difficult for them & they only learn the very basic vocabulary (which never gets them far in anything here). Sweden is a much harder place to live for immigrants than those who are native to the country (born there).

I have to disagree with those who say that Sweden is a hard country to be an immigrant in. The main issue to why the integration process can be difficult is when the immigrant refuses to learn Swedish directly. We're not a 40 language country where the languages spoken differs from store to store. Most elders are not all too keen on English.
If you learn Swedish and are willing to seek out new contacts you'll have a good life in Sweden!

Sweden is the country of dream since 2000 & it remains so. I wanna say that it wil com true.

None of these messages below are intended to be nasty in any way (i'm a very happy person, really :). I have many immigrant friends here in SWE who come from all over the place...ie. Iran, Syria, Iraq, even Somalia!! This info is merely a warning or a "heads up" of what to expect for immigrants who come to SWE for whatever reason. It's not a utopia!! There are MANY hardships they have to face every single day...I see those hardships first-hand with many immigrant families i know...
TrueViking123
Country:  Sweden, Jul 28, 2009
and...If you plan on coming here to work and/or study & be successful you HAVE to learn Swedish & become fluent in the language. It's a very difficult language to learn, esp for those coming from the Middle East, Arabic, Persian, & African nations. It takes many years to learn proper Swedish (even for the language savvy people). Many immigrants come here & can never really grasp the language, even after years of studying it, and thus, are always stuck in minimum wage jobs, or unemployed.

cont'd.....Even the citizens who supposedly receive free education are STILL paying for it in hidden government taxes. It's expensive to live in Sweden. The costs of tuition are only HIDDEN in the form of government taxes on everything: and those taxes here in Sweden are quite high. Immigrants who come here to study usually come from wealthy families who already have money (to pay for the student's high living costs)!! You will see this in real if you come here to study or work or live...
TrueViking123
Country:  Sweden, Jul 28, 2009
Hello again...just adding on to previous comment (from below). There is no such thing as a free education! not even here in Sweden. You are still paying for everything (even if you are a Swedish citizen). The costs of tuition are hidden in the high costs of living in Sweden. TAXES on everything like clothing to food to liquor to gas to entertainment is VERY expensive.
TrueViking123
Country:  Sweden, Jul 28, 2009
Hello all. There seems to be a MAJOR mistake in many of your thinking about free education in Sweden!! Free post-secondary education (college or uni) is ONLY available for SWEDISH CITIZENS!!! you have to already be a Swedish citizen to receive a free education. But the free part is ONLY for tuition. You still have to pay for all living expenses & books etc. which can be VERY expensive in itself!! just letting you all know.

Go see WASA museum... and try travel to "gärdet", a nice big meadow..

For going by bus, train, sub, tram or boat.. just get the SL-card (daypass) or ask to buy a SL-stamp.. which you can buy at "pressbyrån" located at every tube-station.

I just want to agree with "sorhagran", a Swede is never more Swede than when he/she is living abroad. I didn't know how great it actually is to live in Sweden before I moved. the nature, the people (especially the people) and the food! Appreciate what you have!!!

I love my beautyfully homeland Sweden with all the lakes and small towns. In Sweden people mean what they say, and don't say things they don't mean!
I love the Swedish traditions that gets to be more important when you are living abroad, a Swede is never more Swede then when he or her are living in another country.
