The weather today was much better, so I began by going back to the Linnaeus Garden and taking a proper sunny panorama. With my mission for the day accomplished so early, I turned onto the E4 and aimed North.
The road hit the coastline in the town of Gävle, which was in the throes of its own summer festival, drawing big crowds. I made a point of stopping there, and in all subsequent towns along the coast, because until now these places have been just names on a map, interchangeable. This trip is going to change that.
One surprise was how pretty these towns are. For some reason I assumed Sweden outside Stockholm looked like some of Stockholm's suburbs, comprised comfortable but bland low-rise apartment blocks. Not so: Sundsvall's main street, for example, is a parade of ornate Victorian towers, the legacy of a 19th century industrialists' architectural arms race.

Sundsvall, too, was in the midst of its summer festival, billed as "Sweden's largest dragonboat race" (and no doubt the only one).
I've decided to explore the High Coast, tomorrow — a section of the coastline that my guidebook rates highly for its photogenic hills and cliffs swooping into the sea.
