Typical Swedish housing

Housing standards

Swedish homes and apartments generally maintain a very high standard. You can expect well-equipped kitchens, well-functioning water and heating systems in housing free of pests and infestations. Access to high-speed broadband and several TV channels (for added subscription and licensing fees) are also a natural part of Sweden’s high housing standards. In most cases, there are likely to be nearby schools, shops and public transport.

The average apartment

In 2009, the average monthly rent for a three-room apartment with kitchen in Sweden was approximately SEK 5,500. In larger metropolitan areas, the average is higher than this. An apartment of this kind is normally about 75 square meters in area, includes two bedrooms, one living room, a kitchen and bathroom, and is suitable for a couple with one or two children.

Added monthly expenses

First-hand and second-hand rental contracts may include different utilities. However, you will usually be expected to pay for electricity, insurance for your home, internet, telephone, and TV licenses in addition to your monthly rent. At least another SEK 4,000–6,000 should be budgeted every month for food, clothing and other expenses for a single person — depending on where in Sweden you happen to live.

Many single-person households

If you move to Sweden alone, you will still be in good company: Sweden has the world’s highest percentage of single-person households. Many single people live in smaller apartments, which are generally very affordable.
