The Swedish education system

Families relocating to Sweden should find it reassuring to know that the Swedish education system offers a range of individual choices based on students’ needs and interests. From the age of six to university, studies are tuition-free.

Ages 1-5 — preschool

Designed to be affordable to all parents, preschool is available to children from age one to the time they begin preschool class for six-year-olds or primary school.

Age 6 — preschool class

Preschool class allows young children to prepare for primary school without the stress of heavy studies or homework.

Ages 7-16 — compulsory schooling

All children in Sweden between seven and 16 are required to attend primary school. Education at this level is provided free of charge.

Ages 16-19 — high school

Swedish high school is free-of-charge, non-compulsory schooling lasting three years. Students can choose between a range of different programs.

Age 18 and above — university/university college

Swedish universities are well known for their innovative thinking and advanced research. Courses focus on critical thinking and collaboration.
