Ages 16-19 — high school

Swedish high school is free-of-charge, non-compulsory schooling lasting three years. Students aiming to pursue a professional career or higher studies can choose between a range of programs at this level.

Students at high school (gymnasiet) are free to choose from 17 national programs as well as individual and specially designed programs. Each program consists of eight core subjects, program-specific subjects and a special project. Programs can range from business, media or arts programs, to natural science and technical programs.

Depending on where a program is available, students may also choose between municipal, independent or boarding schools. Admission to any program or school is granted on an individual basis, most often depending on the student’s final grades from primary school.

High school grades are divided into four levels: fail (IG), pass (G), pass with distinction (VG) and pass with special distinction (MVG). To receive a final diploma from a national or specially designed program, students must receive a grade for all courses and complete the project work required for his or her particular program.
